It’s Friday as we head into the weekend. Tomorrow I’m heading off to Seattle for the SHSMD 2018 conference. This is my first time attending the event, so we’ll see how it goes and report back later. If you live in the Seattle area, we have an open meetup for the Healthcare Scene community on Tuesday, Oct 9. Find all the details for the Seattle meetup here.

This is conference season, so the week after that I’m heading to Boston for the MEDITECH MD and CIO Forum and then the Connected Health Conference. There are a bunch of meetups planned, but I’m going to definitely be going to this SPM, #pinksocks, #hcldr meetup in Boston. Everyone is welcome, so if you’re in Boston, join us for some fun and good people (word on the street is that there will be a dance party after the meetup).

As always, you can see our full schedule of Healthcare Scene conferences and events. We can’t wait to see everyone in Seattle and Boston.

Ok, enough about travel. Time for some Fun Friday humor to get you ready for the weekend. This humor comes from @DocAroundthClok on Twitter. I think you’ll enjoy it.

This 2nd one seems particularly interesting after I just wrote about all the meetups in this post. If you’re like this doctor, then you should definitely join us at the meetups. No eye contact required. I’ll be surprised if the dance party doesn’t include the song Despacito.

Have a great weekend!

It’s Friday and so we often like to kick back a little and let our hair down before we enjoy the weekend. This Friday I stumbled upon a hashtag #EMRHumor. I had to see who had used the hashtag and it turned up some really old tweets and a couple pretty funny ones. I hope you enjoy!

I have no idea how this is EMR humor, but it brings up some interesting points. This makes me wonder the humorous (and possibly dangerous) things that could happen as AI starts talking with doctors in the exam room.

This tweet was from 2013. I’d like to talk with Dr. Jim Morrow now and see how he feels.

I just don’t have words for this one.

Happy Friday! Have a great weekend.

Epic EHR Switching Video from Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC)

We’re back with another Fun Friday video (and a bonus story) to prepare you for the weekend. This week’s Fun Friday video comes from Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) doing a parody of a Hamilton song, “Right Hand Man,” as part of their switch to Epic. The production quality is really quite amazing and I love the choice of Hamilton. Check it out:

Now for a fun little story. I showed one of these EHR go-live videos to the Healthcare IT and EHR course I taught in Dubai. The majority of attendees were from Saudia Arabia with a few from Kuwait and UAE.

Well, the attendees loved the video. I asked them how well creating a video like this would go over in their hospitals. They all laughed and shook their heads. Certainly, the cultures are quite different. However, I did find it interesting that just as many people in the middle east were taking selfies as the US. Maybe the human desire isn’t all that different.

I don’t expect any of my students in the workshop to do anything like the above video. However, the concept of bringing your team together in an effort like what it takes to create this video is a powerful idea that could be applied regardless of culture.

Technology and Healthcare Cartoons – Fun Friday

After Elon Musk’s announcement of NeuraLink Corp which is working to merge the brain with artificial intelligence, this cartoon seemed like the perfect addition to our Fun Friday series of funny blog posts to get you started on your weekend:

Once we’re tapping into the brain, that brings security questions to a whole new level. I agree with The Verge that we’re still probably further away from this than Elon Musk would like to make us think.

Here’s another cartoon that extrapolates the use of technology in healthcare in a funny way:

While this likely feels like quite a stretch, it may not be as far fetched as it may seem. When you combine 3D printing with robotic surgeries, the concept isn’t as crazy as it reads in a cartoon. I always love it when something that seems like a joke becomes a reality.
