Alarm fatigue is a major issue in hospitals. This is illustrated really well in this infographic from Vocera. However, the part of this infographic that stood out most to me was the tie between alarm management and how much it costs the hospital.

One of my favorite hospital topics. Especially alarms that while going unchecked – where there may actually be a problem or emergency, while disturbing everyone around. Yet technology is good enough today to take most of the ‘audio’ and replace it with a nursing station alarm display, with priority colors, with an explanation of the alarm and its urgency being used to dispatch staff as really needed while keeping noise levels way down and making sure that priorities are properly handled. I just don’t get why this hasn’t happened in a lot of hospitals. Sure, there is an expense involved, but the payback is better outcomes, less wasted running around, and overall a better utilized staff and happier patients.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t see any technical barriers to getting it done.
